THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO SPIRIT GUM

It’s been the classic theatrical adhesive since the late 1800’s, but it’s not one size fits all! Discover our range of spirit gums and find the right one for you!

Spirit Gum has been in recorded use since at least the 1870’s for the application of theatrical makeups like wigs and hairpieces, and makeup prosthetics. It’s a fairly simple mixture of alcohol and resin to make this all-rounder adhesive. Traditionally made from mastic resin which is where the name “Mastix” comes from, though our spirit gums use copal resin.

Technology has definitely progressed, and we now boast a full range of gums to suit every individual need.

Kryolan Spirit Gum

The traditional resin adhesive, containing a high amount of copal for long lasting durability. This formula is designed for use with lacefront wigs and facial postiche (moustaches and beards). It is best used by applying directly to the skin and then waiting for it to dry slightly before pressing the object over the top. Alternatively, once you’ve placed the adhesive on the skin, you can tap, tap, tap over the area with a finger, as you tap, the resin will become sticker and stickier until it forms little strings. One this happens it’s good to go.
This formula has a relatively slow drying time, giving you the ability to reposition and adjust your piece until it’s perfect!

This formula comes in a 12ml Bottle, a 50mL bottle and a large 1L bottle for bulk use.

TV Spirit Gum

In the modern age of bright lights, HD cameras and action, TV Spirit Gum…well we’d say it shines but it’s actually the opposite!

TV Spirit Gum is a make-up artist’s adhesive, especially for adhering hair, beards, and wigs. The special mixture of natural resins of TV Spirit Gum means that, after it dries, it appears more matt and more natural on the skin than does normal Spirit Gum.
It’s applied in exactly the same way as the traditional formula with that same generous drying time to allow for adjustment.

It comes in a handy 50mL bottle or large 1L bottle.

Spirit Gum P

(Pssst… the “P” is for “perspiration”)

Spirit Gum P is a synthetic adhesive with especially strong adhesion power, for attaching beards, wigs, and small facial appliances. Spirit Gum P is used when the extreme perspiration of an actor or model makes it impossible for other spirit gum types to hold sufficiently, or when high humidity causes normal spirit gum to leave white residue. Since Spirit Gum P is also effective in strengthening the holding power of other adhesives, it can be mixed with normal spirit gum types. Apply Spirit Gum P with a brush to the required areas of skin, and press on the object to be adhered.
It is important to ensure the correct positioning of the object, since, unlike the other kinds, only a short time is available until the adhesive preparation hardens and later correction is no longer possible.

Available in a 50mL bottle or large 1L bottle.

Best removed with Spirit Gum P remover, MME can be used, though is less efficient.

Hydro Spirit Gum

This is a user and skin friendly preparation, containing no solvent it’s a water-based alternative. It can be used for the application of glitters and gems when you’re feeling those festival vibes or when you only need a prosthetic on for a short time.
It’s also perfect for holding down hair and eyebrows before they are covered with a bald cap or plastic film.
Apply in a thin layer then allow to dry slightly, similarly to the traditional formula, then sprinkle your glitter or press on your gems.

This formula comes in a 12ml Bottle, a 50mL bottle and a large 1L bottle for bulk use.

Easily removed with soap and water!

HD Pro Gum 30ml

The latest gum made specifically for the modern age and to address any and all of the drawbacks found in traditional spirit gum formulas. Ideal for applying lace hairpieces reliably and invisibly.

A newly engineered adhesive for high-definition cameras and highest requirements concerning adhesion: HD Pro Gum combines excellent adhesion with extraordinary flexibility. The viscous fluid levels the lace without emphasizing the threads, thus reducing tulle shadows visible with HD. HD Pro Gum is easily applied both under and onto lace and can be corrected conveniently with a generous drying time.
After being pressed onto the skin, its naturalistic shine adapts perfectly to any skin type. HD Pro Gum is also moisture-proof so will never turn white in humidity!
Apply in the same way as traditional gum.

Available in a 30mL bottle.

Remove with HD Pro Gum Remover or HD Pro Gum Remover Gel.

As a note, all Kryolan products are designed with safety and skin compatibility in mind. However when using strong adhesives and solvents it’s always best practice to perform a skin compatibility patch test before use.
